Purpose in life is nothing to be
sneezed at. Most of us would sincerely give a lot to have a purpose beyond
ourselves. We would do this because serving God to the end of an innate passion
is the most delightful work ever.
Besides this, and underpinning
this purpose, is a fact of God: faithful in all his ways.
Saying yes to the God who calls us
is not about being perfectly positioned or resourced accordingly, but it is
about timing and the sweet whisper of blessing that wafts within our
circumstances paving the way for this thing to occur.
Living Where We Are Called Right Now
Well and truly besides the calls
in our hearts to follow a particular direction, God calls us to live this day
from the vantage point we own right now.
This seems almost too obvious; to
live contentedly, beyond striving for something else; something ‘better’. But
that is the call right now, made genuinely simple.
Our common default is to try and
bypass the basic route God has laid out for us. It seems too simple or not
elaborate enough. But it is what it is.
God has no magnificent call of us
that does not also include living out the mundane moment. It is never God’s
will for us to escape the responsibilities he has brought us to now. We must do
these things first. We must do these things, diligently, before other things can
be added.
Trusting the God Who Has Called You
When we have done the basic things
without complaint, having become blissfully content with living our average
lives, we have placed the kingdom
of God first (Matthew
6:33). This achieved, we have first hand knowledge of the faithfulness of God
to convert us to living eternally in the here-and-now. We have, in our moment,
gotten beyond covetousness. We have, in that moment, gotten beyond trying to hold
God to ransom.
God always has bigger plans for us
than we can imagine, but they are different to how we envisage them.
Second-guessing God is never a good idea, because our constrained vision limits
the work of the Lord.
Our God-devoid vision will
constantly frustrate the Spirit in working for the new thing coming. But when
we prove we trust God by doing the basic things, by being obedient, the new
things coming can approach without impediment.

Saying yes to the God who calls us
is first about obeying his will this present day. We cannot receive what is
coming tomorrow until we first do what we must today. Today’s work must be
completed first before tomorrow’s work can be added.
